Mediation for Independent Professionals
and Small Businesses - FAQs
If you're facing a disagreement in your business — with a client, supplier, partner, or team member — mediation offers a practical and respectful way to resolve it. Below are some of the most common questions I’m asked.

What is mediation?
Mediation is a confidential, voluntary process where a neutral third party (the mediator) helps people in conflict communicate more effectively and work toward a mutually acceptable solution.
It’s not about deciding who’s right or wrong. It’s about creating a structured, respectful space where both sides can express concerns, clarify misunderstandings, and find common ground.

How is mediation different from going to court?
Mediation is:
-
Quicker and more cost-effective
-
Confidential — unlike court proceedings, which are usually public
-
Flexible — the outcomes can be tailored to your specific needs
-
Voluntary — no one is forced to accept a solution they’re not comfortable with
It also helps preserve relationships and encourages cooperation, which can be essential in ongoing business or professional interactions.

What kinds of issues can be resolved through mediation?
Mediation can help resolve a wide range of business-related disputes, including:
-
Unpaid invoices or late payment disputes
-
Disagreements over contract terms or project expectations
-
Communication breakdowns with clients, suppliers, or collaborators
-
Tensions between business partners or team members
-
Complaints about customer service, delivery, or performance
If you're unsure whether your issue is suitable for mediation, I’m happy to talk it through with you.

When is the right time to try mediation?
Mediation is most effective when used early — before positions become entrenched or legal action is considered. If communication is becoming strained or tensions are building, it's a good time to seek support.

Will the mediator tell us who’s right or wrong?
No. As a mediator, I do not make judgments, take sides, or impose decisions. My role is to support both parties in having a constructive conversation and to guide you through a process that can lead to a resolution you both agree on.

How does the mediation process work?
Mediation typically follows these steps:
-
Initial Consultation – I speak with each party individually to understand the background and any concerns.
-
Joint Session(s) – A structured conversation takes place, either in person or online, facilitated by me.
-
Agreement – If a resolution is reached, we can document the key points to ensure clarity moving forward.
The process is tailored to your needs — it can be as brief or in-depth as necessary.

Is mediation confidential?
Yes. Everything discussed during mediation is private. It will not be shared with anyone outside the process unless both parties explicitly agree. This confidentiality helps create a safe and open environment for honest conversation.

How much does mediation cost?
I offer affordable and transparent pricing, with fixed-fee options for shorter or one-off interventions. Mediation is typically far less expensive than legal proceedings or prolonged disputes. Please get in touch to receive a quote based on your specific situation.
